The impact that stress has on our mental and physical health is profound. While short-term stress is normal, prolonged stress can lead to anxiety, depression, developing harmful coping strategies and even things like digestive and immune system issues. Stress can also lead to burnout, which is a chronic state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion.
When we can identify the things in our lives that cause us the most stress, we can start to put protective practices, like rest, into place to help us manage and prevent stress from escalating. The earlier we are able to intervene in these areas, the more we can reduce the long-term mental and physical consequences of stress.
Rest isn't laziness, it is also not a reward for completing tasks, it is actually a mental health skill. It gives our nervous system and body an opportunity to settle and can help make room for self-compassion where there has only been pressure.
