PERSEID METEOR SHOWER OVER OAKVILLE & THE GTA!-August 12-13

💫 PERSEID METEOR SHOWER OVER OAKVILLE & THE GTA! 🌠
One of the most spectacular meteor showers of the summer is almost here! The Perseids peak overnight August 12–13, with good viewing opportunities on the surrounding nights of August 11–14 as well.
Away from city lights, you may be able to spot dozens of meteors streaking across the sky. ✨
📍 CLOSEST TO OAKVILLE:
🌳 Bronte Creek Provincial Park — Oakville/Burlington
Open areas and fields can offer a darker view than central Oakville.
🌊 Coronation Park & Oakville Lakeshore — Oakville
Probably the easiest option if you don’t want to travel. There will be city light pollution, but brighter meteors may still be visible over Lake Ontario.
🌌 Rattlesnake Point — Milton
About 25–30 minutes from Oakville. Higher elevation along the Niagara Escarpment and considerably darker surroundings.
🌌 Mount Nemo Conservation Area — Burlington
About 25–30 minutes away. Another Escarpment location away from Oakville’s brightest lights.
🌠 A LITTLE FARTHER:
📍 Forks of the Credit / Caledon — about 45–60 minutes
Head north of Brampton and the glow of the GTA begins to fade considerably.
📍 Binbrook / Glanbrook area — about 45–60 minutes
More rural surroundings south of Hamilton can provide darker skies.
🌌 WORTH THE DRIVE FOR DARKER SKIES:
📍 Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve — Muskoka, about 2 hours
One of Ontario’s best-known stargazing destinations, with broad rocky terrain and very dark skies.
📍 Long Point area — Lake Erie, about 1.5–2 hours
A darker southern Ontario destination with a wide horizon over the lake.
📍 Glen Major Forest / Uxbridge area — northeast of Toronto
Rural countryside and darker skies beyond the GTA.
📍 Lennox & Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area — about 2.5–3 hours east of Oakville
A dedicated dark-sky viewing site for anyone willing to make a real stargazing trip out of it.
💡 METEOR-WATCHING TIPS:
✨ Give your eyes at least 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
📱 Put the phone away — bright screens destroy your night vision.
🪑 Bring a blanket or reclining chair and look at as much of the sky as possible.
🧥 Pack a sweater — August nights can get surprisingly cool.
☕ A thermos of coffee or tea never hurts.
🌠 And when you see that first shooting star… don’t forget to make a wish!

Please check park hours, nighttime-access rules and parking restrictions before heading out, especially at conservation areas and provincial parks.
